Zack and Molly

I was 14 years old when my parents gave me a budget and said I could design my own bedroom. Amazing!! I loved it and decided then I'd found my calling - design. 15 years, 2 kids, 1 husband and a few wrinkles later I became a Textile Designer and founder of my business, Zack and Molly, working from my studio in Northumberland.

Like a lot of working Mums life is busy. I usually forget to drink enough water, my handbag often resembles a toy box and I now own more tins of beans than fancy shoes. With this hectic-style-of-life in mind I designed our fun and inspirational, practical collections of stationery, homewares and accessories.

Our happy lifestyle brand is identifiable by its soft colour palette of grey and pastel shades. We use local suppliers and carefully sourced environmentally-friendly, high quality materials. Inspiration comes from my family and helping people feel great. Many of my ideas come from everyday kerfuffles and a desire to make hectic life easier. My fun designs aim to inspire and make people smile.

The business is named after my children - Zack, four, loves to explore, collect things and find out how everything works. Molly is three. She loves pink and is my feisty little acrobat. I live with these two rascals, their Dad (my husband Dan) and our puppy Freddie, who is also a bit of a rascal!

After winning a Mumpreneur 100 Award for 2015 I'm very excited for the future of the business and have lot's of goals to achieve. I have a strong work ethic but my work/life balance will always be tipped in favour of life. The great thing is that I love what I do so it rarely feels like work.

Mama Tip

There are three key things I would tell any working Mum or Mumpreneur.
1) Be Organised – Decide how many hours are realistic for you to dedicate to your business and work within the parameters of family life.
2) Be Strict – with yourself and with others. Work time is precious and solely for work, not for chores.
3) Appropriate Workspace - This could mean anything from a room, office, desk or simply a dining room table.

Oh and one more thing...remember, we do what we can with what we’ve got and when we know better, we do better. So, do your best but be realistic and go easy on yourself.
